The modern bar code as we know it began in 1948 with Bernard Silver's idea
when he was a graduate student at Drexel Institute of Technology in
Philadelphia, PA. The date October 20, 1949 marks the official birthday
of the bar code. On that day, Norman J. Woodland and Bernard Silver,
while working at the Drexel Institute of Technology in Philadelphia,
filed a patent application for a method of classifying items based on the
photo-response to a set pattern of lines or colors.
